Myth No. 2: Siegelman did not benefit personally from the donations
It’s true the at the $500,000 did not land in Siegelman’s pocket, but the argument he did not benefit from the donations is false.
The lottery campaign borrowed money to cover much of its expenses. Siegelman was one of two signatories who personally guaranteed the loan. Had the lottery campaign not been able to pay off the debt with Scrushy’s two checks, Siegelman would have had to pay at least half that debt from his own pocket.
