The wife of the gunman in the massacre at an Orlando gay nightclub tried to talk him out of an attack, according to several news outlets.
Omar Mateen’s wife, Noor Zahi Salman, told the FBI she was with him when he bought ammo and a holster, sources familiar with the case said.
She also said that she once drove him to the gay nightclub, Pulse, because he wanted to scope the place out.
A total of 49 people were killed and another 53 injured in Sunday’s rampage.
Officials are considering filing charges again Salman for not telling them what she knew before the attack. The pair have a 3-year-old son.
According the NY Post, federal prosecutors have convened a grand jury to investigate Salman, a source said.
Are any of these gay hate crimes committed by people who aren’t gay?
The Orlando shooting? Gay guy.

An hour-long fact-finding teleconference between the Baldwin County Commission and the federal government Tuesday about possibly resettling undocumented immigrant youths at two remote air fields ended with a stern comment:
“I don’t want to be rude but … You’re not welcome,” said Baldwin County Commissioner Chris Elliott. “We are not interested in having these facilities here.”
The feds do not care….
Still, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through its Office of Refugee Resettlement, is analyzing the two underutilized Naval outlying fields near Silverhill and Orange Beach to temporarily house up to 2,000 minors who crossed into the U.S. unaccompanied by parents or guardians.
Immigration agents catch an abysmally small percentage of the illegal immigrants who arrived on visas but overstayed their welcome, authorities admitted to Congress Tuesday, describing a loophole that those around the globe are increasingly using to gain a foothold in the U.S.
At least 480,000 people overstayed their visas last year, adding to a backlog that’s reached some 5 million total, members of Congress said. But immigration agents launched investigations into just 10,000 of them, or about 0.2 percent, and arrested fewer than 2,000, less than 0.04 percent, saying the others don’t rise to the level of being priority targets.
“We utilize our prioritization scheme along with the resources that we have,” Craig Healy, assistant director for national security investigations at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said as he struggled to defend the administration’s meager efforts.
Before the Orlando tragedy on Sunday night, Idaho passed a law allowing its citizens ages 21 and older to concealed carry firearms without obtaining a permit. Now, Alabama Second Amendment activists are urging the Yellowhammer State to do the same.
There are only eight states that allow for permitless concealed carry: Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Vermont, Wyoming and West Virginia.
In 2016, Alabama took many steps towards widening the scope of Alabamians Second Amendment rights. A bill pushed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) to allow retired military veterans to obtain a concealed carry permitfor free passed with wide support and was signed by Governor Bentley (R-AL). Another bill, championed by Senator Gerald Allen (R-Tuscaloosa), allowing for Alabamians to carry pistols in their cars without a permit passed in the Senate, but died in the house as the regular session came to a close.
As of 2015, Alabama is the concealed carry capital of the United States, with over 12.6 percent of adults owning a permit. And the numbers are only growing. Jefferson County, for instance, is on track to issue almost 63 percent more pistol permits to women this year than last year.
With these patterns, it is likely that Alabama could join the eight other states in the union that allow for concealed carry without a permit. While Alabama fees vary from county to county, the price of one can be fairly expensive. A standard 5-year permit issued in Jefferson County costs $40, while the same permit in Baldwin, Coosa, DeKalb, Lowndes, and Macon Counties costs $125.
Hackers connected to the Russian government broke into the servers of the Democratic National Committee and stole opposition research on Donald Trump, the cybersecurity experts responding to the intrusion said Tuesday.
Two separate Russian intelligence-linked cyberattack groups were both in the DNC’s networks, Dmitri Alperovitch, co-founder and chief technology officer of CrowdStrike, which responded to the breach, told CNN. They likely didn’t even know the other was in the systems, he added.
The U.S. government, however, has not yet determined that the hackers who breached the server are connected to the Russian government, a U.S. official told CNN.
The government is usually hesitant to publicly blame another government for a cyberattack, famously doing so weeks into the investigation into North Korea’s attack on Sony Entertainment. But other times the government has remained quiet, concerned of the geopolitical consequences and waiting for strong enough evidence that it might hold up in court. Private security that investigate and respond to cyberattacks, however, tend to be less restricted in pointing fingers at governments based on their own research.
The breach was first reported by The Washington Post.
That’s pretty amazing.
As MEE notes, the Petra News Agency published on Sunday what it described as exclusive comments from Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman which included a claim that Riyadh has provided 20 percent of the total funding to the prospective Democratic candidate’s campaign.
The report was later deleted and the news agency has not responded to requests for comment from Middle East Eye. However, the deletion took place too late, as the Washington-based Institute for Gulf Affairs managed to capture the report and has re-published the original Arabic Petra report, which quoted Prince Mohammed as having said Saudi Arabia had provided with “full enthusiasm” an undisclosed amount of money to Clinton.
The US Senate moves towards women in the draft…
House and Senate will soon begin wrangling over their versions of the annual defense bill, and one component in particular is generating lots of heat: whether young women must register for the military draft. The Senate bill that passed on Tuesday requires them to do so, but the House bill passed earlier does not, reports the New York Times. Which side will prevail when the final version emerges is anyone’s guess at this point, reports Military.com. The Senate measure would require women who turn 18 starting on Jan. 1, 2018, to sign up for the draft, which hasn’t actually been used since 1973.
Two competing quotes:
- Ted Cruz: “I am the father of two daughters. Women can do anything they put their minds to … but the idea that we should forcibly conscript young girls into combat to my mind makes little to no sense. I could not vote for a bill that did so, particularly a bill that did so without public debate.”
- John McCain, who chairs the Armed Services Committee: “Every uniform leader of the United States military seemed to have a different opinion from the senator from Texas whose military background is not extensive,” he said, per Politico. “After months of rigorous oversight, a large bipartisan majority on the Armed Services Committee agreed that there is simply no further justification to limit Selective Service registration to men.”

INDIAN officials have “arrested” 18 lions to find to try and root out a man eating beast suspected of killing three people.
Forest workers in Gujarat state are planning to test the lions’ paw prints and excrement in an attempt to identify the killer cat.
If ‘convicted’ the guilty beast will be banged up in a zoo for the rest of it’s days while the ‘innocent’ lions will be released back into the Gir sanctuary.
Six attacks on humans have been reported in the area recently, which is the only habitat of the endangered Asiatic lion.
