Sean Hannity is talking like he may be ready to support a third-party,
On Monday, Fox News host Sean Hannity declared it may be time for a conservative third-party for those who are just “sick” of the establishment Republicans that undermine conservatives.
Saying he did not “think this country is going to survive with half-measures,” Hannity declared, “either you believe that we need radical, positive, oriented solutions for this country and you willing to fight for them or you’re not.”
“Is it a third-party we need? I’ve often argued no,” Hannity said on his radio show. “I’m not so sure anymore. It may be time for a new conservative party in America. I’m sick of these guys.”
This is silly and anyone who reads history knows it.
The only successful third-party start-up in American history was the Republican Party in the 1850′s. It was successful because the Whigs destroyed themselves along sectional lines and because northern Democrats left their party in droves. The political vacuum in the north was filled by the new Republican Party as it beat out its competition and consolidated opposition to the Democrats.
Since then, when a would be third party movement has any good ideas, those ideas are adopted by one or more of the major parties before the third-party really takes off. That of course is some measure of success. Third party splinters from the Republican party always help Democrats.
Conservatives cannot prosper as Democrats. For conservatives, the GOP is the only game in town and they will win there or not at all. Third-party talk is silly and counterproductive. Conservatives need to work harder and smarter and out think and out campaign their opposition in both parties.
