Not a good night for my guys…
Jonathan Hitt lost his City Council race (District 3)
Former Redstone Arsenal garrison commander John Olshefski, the leading vote-getter in Tuesday’s election for the council’s District 3 seat, will meet retired Huntsville police Lt. Barry Pendergraft in the Oct. 5 runoff.
I thought if Olshefski got less than 35% we would be looking at a clear win for whoever made the run-off with him. With these numbers we clearly have race in district 3.
Dr. Jennie Robinson led with a run-off necessary.
Turnout was relatively high in south Huntsville’s District 3, as 22 percent of registered voters cast a ballot for school board. Robinson received about 48 percent, or 2,731 votes. McGinnis received about 46 percent of the total, or 2,595 votes.
The third candidate, classical musician Mark Huff emerged with about 352 votes, forcing the runoff.
Four years ago, Robinson survived Huntsville’s closest political contest, defeating McGinnis by fewer than 400 votes. She enters this runoff leading by just 136 votes.
You know if Robinson would pledge to do what she already refused to do in regard to military families I would probably be on board.
I think Mark Huff and his free campaign website (www.freewebsite.commarkfufffordistrict3seriouslyiamalegitimatecandidate) were totally legitimate and not just a 3rd party to siphon off anti-Robinson votes.

“I thought if Olshefski got less than 35% we would be looking at a clear win for whoever made the run-off with him. With these numbers we clearly have race in district 3.”
I still can’t believe that we had this many people in S Huntsville who voted for a person who has no roots here and was funded by outside money almost exclusively. Since Jonathon Hitt did not make it I hope eh and all the other candidates line up behind Mr. Pendergraft. I will be supporting Mr. Pendergraft rabidly because he IS involved in S Huntsville and hopefully a few informed voters and the SHCA can turn out votes for him in the runoff. A win by Mr. Olshefski would be disastrous.
Question: Will the runoff be at the same time as the other Nov elections or a separate election? I would think a separate election would favor Pendergraft.
October 5th. All of these elections need to be on the same day. This is absurd.
Question for you: What has Olshefski done that is so bad, I will be honest I was very leery of him at first but as this race has gone on, I am noticing all the innuendo is baseless.
“What has Olshefski done that is so bad”
Almost any politician’s stance can be traced to whoever paid his bills to get into office, Mr. Olshefski seems to be bought and paid for by outside interests that make you question why they want to affect District 3 race so much? I guess the real question is why would we WANT anyone that has no roots here over someone who has spent almost their whole life here and knows the area for good and bad?
We know that much of the money interests interests in Huntsville want this “decentralization of poverty” which means move it out of downtown. Many of these people are funding Olshefski and they could care less about S Huntsville and a vote for him IMHO is just making it easier to destroy our neighborhoods in S Huntsville.
Bottom Line: Even if might be wrong, why would you gamble on it???? I have seen nothing that would make me think Mr. Pendergraft would sell out to other interests. I supported Jonathon Hitt because I felt he was a bit more independent and empathetic than Mr. Pendergraft but I never had any delusions about Mr. Olshefski and his connections. Let us say both candidates are equally qualified, I still ask WHY would you gamble the future of your neighborhood??
I have come to the sad conclusion that we will not see another dedicated representative such as Sandra Moon again in my lifetime.
PS: thanks for the run-off election day info.
I have only been here 3 years. Am I unfit for office?
“I have only been here 3 years. Am I unfit for office?”
Unfit?? How about unqualified for a local office where you should actually need to know your area, nope, you are not even close. I think there should be a rule that says you have to live in the district you are running for (local, county, or state) for a minimum of 5 years. I have lived here 20 years and I do not expect you (or anyone with 3 years) to have the knowledge of this district I have, but I also don’t expect you to try to tell me you do indeed have what it takes to run my district. I expect you to know where every running trail is, the general condition of all the roads in a small area as this, and be able to be called or emailed by your constituents and expect a reply from YOU within 2 business days MAX. You should KNOW what are the most important issues to your district NOT to Huntsville as a whole. I feel Mr. Olshefski fails on many of these accounts. Many of us in S Huntsville have felt we were at war with the city for the last couple of years and the last thing we need is someone who cannot possibly appreciate that situation. Add to all this the fact that the housing market is making the sale of homes almost impossible and you then have people who want to get out and can’t. Go talk to the people who have property adjoining or near Stone Manor or Mahogany Row and see how they feel about the City government. Ask around and see how we feel when we get called racists anytime we want to protect what we spent years building. I mention these things because I feel sure Mr. Pendergraft is aware of all of this while Mr. Olshefski has no clue. So NO Dale you nor Mr. Olshefski haven’t a clue how we really feel in S Huntsville and should not even be considered a viable candidate.
I am running for Mayor next time…
“I am running for Mayor next time”
1. If my math is right you make the 5 year thing by then.
2. Since I have made it clear I detest the current mayor I would vote for you over him
3. I expect you will have company, probably Mr. O
I also refuse to learn anything about the community.
I am like Lex Luthor, I want power to destroy everything I touch.
As I was listening to your program yesterday I was wondering if you were in School Board District 3 (I know you don’t), if you could really pull the trigger and vote for Walker McGinnis, the AEA candidate, or Mark Huff, the non-candidate. I understand that Jennie Robinson hasn’t done a couple things the way you wanted, but is it so bad that Walker McGinnis is really the better option???? I’m really concerned that Walker will win and we’ll have a school board full of pro-AEA members, minus District 2, and that’s hard to stomach. I’m positive that if you got behind Jennie, she’d win this race and we’d be saved from Walker McGinnis.
I am anti-non honest politician and will would vote that way. If she wins fine, but she needs to do what she says she is going to.
Honesty.
So you’d vote for McGinnis??? Or Huff? Which one? They aren’t very good options.
Robinson started out a step behind based on how she did not keep her word. She hasn’t caught up.
So, what’s your answer? AEA McGinnis or non-candidate Huff?
I would have voted McGinnis.
Was that painful to type?
P.S. Love that you are having these blog conversations during your show. Ha ha!
Skillz.
And in ebonics!
John Olshefski, has lived here only 5 years, and with big special interest money, amd AEA support, he got a lot of votes. Expect the other candidates who are more conservatives to rally around Barry Pendergraft, with Pendergraft winning the runnoff.
John Olshefski, has Democrat connections. Supported by the Democrat Effinger crowd. For example, John Hayes uncle of Jeff Enfinger, has 2 prime located fields near Home Depot. These 2 fields have signs of Democrats like Steve Raby for Congress and Tim Mitchell for State Senate, and John Olshefski, and the fields are absent of signs of conservative Republicans.
Barry Pendergraft has been endorsed by the South Hunstville Civic Assocation. He takes a strong stand against illegal immigration. Expect the more conservative Peneergraft to prevail.
